- Tim How on the Majestic Retail Management Programme
Overview
Tim How is CEO of Majestic Wines. Each year they recruit around 150 people onto their Retail Management Programme. We ask Tim about the programme and the opportunities for career progression at Majestic.
Majestic only recruit mainly graduates to run stores as trainee managers These graduates will go on to study the WSET Diploma and the typical progression to manager is year 1 trainee, year 2 assistant manager, year 3 manager. They have a team of 60 at head office, most of whom have worked in a store. The total staff of 750. So far they have not needed to recruit outside Majestic for head office positions. Their staff turnover is 25% so on average the stay is 4 years but in reality there are staff who are at Majestic a good deal longer.
A third of the graduate programme drop out after the first year. There is also a Placement Programme for students in the 3rd year of a 4 year course spending a year out in industry. If they return, that year counts as the first year of the trainee programme and so they join as assistant manager. Tim says if you want to learn about wine and want to develop a career in the wine industry in the UK there is no better place to work than Majestic.
