Earliest Roman vineyard discovered?
Archaeologists have unearthed a 2,000 year old irrigation system on some farmland in Cambridge. The system is believed to have been used to cultivate an ancient Roman Vineyard. If confirmed the discovery will be the earliest example of Roman irrigation ever uncovered in Britain. The fully-defined planting beds were closely set and were probably grapevines or possibly asparagus.
Looks like the planned development of housing, shops and a new school on the site may be on hold then!
