UK wine lists controlled by a few

Supply of wine to the on-trade in the UK is being controlled by an ever decreasing pool of players it would seem. A 2014 report by The Wine On-Premise shows that 30 suppliers control 90% of the wine lists in the UK. This is up from 75% last year. The report also shows that French wines are missing out to Spanish wines. Prosecco continues to win in the Sparkling Wine battle up 35% whilst Champagne is 11% down. The Languedoc is also seeing an increase whilst Chile is suffering as on-trade avoid wines in the £20 and below bracket. New Zealand however saw its 6th consecutive year of growth with listings up 4%. This comes as the Yealands Wine Group, New Zealand's 6th largest wine exporter looks to UBS bank for capital raising options to increase their vineyard holdings and grow their grape supply. The strategic review will look at both existing vineyards and greenfield opportunities in Marlborough.
