St Emilion going enviro-mental
St Emilion Appellation and its satellites have decided that all producers from the 2019 vintage onwards must be environmentally friendly to use the St Emillion Appelation.
The new rules, which where reported in the Washington Post, will require all St Emilion Appellation wines to be either Sustainable Viticulture, Organic or Biodynamic by 2019. Those that have not achieved any these three certifications will still be able to use the appellation if they are in the process of being certified. All wineries in the appellations of St. Emilion, St. Emilion Grand Cru, Lussac St. Emilion and Puisseguin St. Emilion will be required to be certified. Wineries that are not certified, and are not in the process of certification, will only be able to use the less-prestigious Bordeaux appellation.
