Wine drinkers getting a thirst for knowledge

UK wine drinkers are not only getting their noses into a glass, but also stuck into wine books, it seems. At Tesco, demand for books about wine has increased by 125 per cent since 2005, as consumers want to know more about what they are uncorking and pouring into their glass.

The supermarket’s current top sellers include Dorling Kindersley’s Wines of the World, 1000 Best Wine Secrets by Carolyn Hammond and Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book.

Bookstore chain Waterstone’s are also finding increased interest for books on the subject as consumers’ thirst for wine knowledge grows. The company told ThirtyFifty: ‘We've noticed a trend in books by younger, hipper wine writers like Matt Skinner, suggesting that there is a new generation of wine enthusiasts breaking through.’
