Judgement of Paris sale makes history

Judgement of Paris wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ historic 'SLV' Cabernet Sauvignon from 1973 sells for US$12,300.

The Judgement of Paris was the 1976 wine tasting that pitted US vs French wines and put the US onto the wine map. The Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ historic 'SLV' Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1973 was the top ranked red wine, beating top Bordeaux wines, as judged by the French judges.

With only a few bottles in the world remaining, the price of the wine has risen over time, with Heritage Auctions selling off nearly 4,000 wines from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ ‘legacy collection’.

Winning wines have been named by the prestigious Smithsonian Institution as among 101 items that ‘made America’, alongside Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit and Abraham Lincoln’s top hat.
