WSET courses back on in China

The WSET is to resume courses in Mainland China after being suspended in January 2021. China had been one of WSET largest markets with 90 course providers.

The Chinese government initially stopped the WSET running courses because they were a non-government charity. They will now operate as an overseas non-government organisation (ONGO) with a Representative Office in Shanghai.

Willa Yang, appointed as the Chief Representative for WSET operations in China, said: Existing students can now complete the courses they started before 29th January 2021, and new students can embark on their WSET journeys.

The previous CEO of WSET Ian Harris had said on the UK Wine Show that he hoped to have courses running by the end of 2021, when it was thought the new structure was approved. However, further delays occurred, and it is believed that the ruling communist party needed to ensure that the teaching materials met their propaganda requirements.
