UK government U-turns again on wine duty
The UK government has reversed its planned freeze on alcohol duty that it reversed only a few weeks ago.
Ex Chancellor Rishi Sunak had announced a new duty methodology in 2021 that would have seen on average an increase in duty for wine, with a variable rate based on alcohol strength.
Under Liz Truss’s newly formed government, her first appointed Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng froze this planned change for a year in his disastrous mini budget.
This week, the new chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, (replacing Kwarteng) has announced that he will undo the freeze on duty.
