New lighter weight bottle for sparkling wines

Champagne producer Telmont launches new lighter weight bottle for sparkling wines.

The new 800g bottle weight knock 35g off the next lightest bottle used in Champagne, helping to reduce the carbon footprint.

Telmont, part of the Rémy Cointreau group, claims 24% of their carbon footprint comes from the bottle alone while, once the packaging and transportation is considered, the carbon footprint jumps to 50%.

Since 2011 Telmont have reduced the glass weight from 900g/btl to 835g saving 8,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. To remove the weight they trimmed the amount of glass from the shoulders of the bottle. Compared to lightweight still wine bottles which can be as low as 330g the 835g bottle is still on the beefier side.

Using lighter bottles does risk bottles breaking but during a 6 month trial they only lost one bottle to breakage.
