Bordeaux is best-known wine region
Bordeaux is the world’s best-known wine region - followed by Champagne and Chianti. That’s what a new survey conducted by Wine Intelligence has found.
The Vinitrac survey of 11,000 wine consumers across 11 countries showed that Bordeaux ranks first in eight of them. It also pinpointed Rioja as the region that’s best at translating awareness into getting us buying. In fact, it is number one for that in the UK.
Cotes du Rhone wines are particularly successful in North European countries, such as the UK, Ireland, Finland and Denmark. While Chablis and Provence have relatively high awareness in comparison to the amount of wine sold from these regions.
In the UK, wine drinkers follow the overall trend by putting Bordeaux top of their wine awareness list and Champagne second. However, then it’s Burgundy that takes the third slot.
The survey, which measured awareness and purchase of 28 regions and appellations, will be repeated next month with 12 countries, incuding France, Belgium and Sweden this time.
