Wine retailer Majestic purchases Vagabond Wines

Wine retailer Majestic has purchased self-pour wine bar chain Vagabond.

The shutting of Vagabond's profitable Heathrow store two years after investing £1.3 million to open it, was the final nail in the coffin for Vagabond. The closure was blamed on security reconfiguration, but the closing of the store, along with debts from Covid, resulted in Vagabond appointing administrators.

Majestic CEO John Colley said “The combination of the two businesses presents exciting new opportunities for us to grow our customer base, take the Majestic brand to a younger audience.”

One of the reasons given for the purchase is that the acquisition also gives Majestic the opportunity to grow its customer base – sources note that Vagabond has more than 400,000 people on their database – and engage with a younger demographic of wine consumers and enhance its proposition “which is focused on discovering new wines in an experiential environment”.

Majestic has said they intend to keep the name Vagabond.
