Wine guy's marathon blind tasting

Wine merchant Tom Gilbey blind tasted 25 glasses of wine during this week's London Marathon.

Gilbey, known as the wine guy, said he aimed to raise £2,000 for Sobell House hospice charity in Oxford, who cared for his mum in her final days. His fundraiser has now passed £13,000.

Videos of him blind tasting amassed 3.2 million views on Tik Tok. So how did he do? Tom was overtaken by a fridge and a camel but he finished the marathon in a respectable 4:41 minutes including stops for wine and correctly identified 7 of the 25 wines, got 4 wrong & 14 mostly right. The wines ranged from bottles bought at petrol stations, mini bottles and canned wine, to a £40 Barolo. Tom claimed not to drink every wine “If they were good, I might swallow it, and if they were bad, they went on the road.”

He celebrated his achievement by drinking a glass of champagne after completing the race.
