Wales plans Deposit Return Scheme

Wales has announced plans to create its own Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), breaking away from a UK-wide framework. Unlike other UK nations, Wales' scheme will include glass, reflecting a commitment to sustainability despite concerns about cost and complexity for businesses.

Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies confirmed the decision, citing the need for a bespoke approach. The move follows debates over excluding glass due to safety and storage challenges. While some industry groups criticised the shift, others see it as a bold step to improve recycling.

Wales is now the only UK nation planning to include glass in its DRS, after the Scottish government was forced to abandon its plans to include glass by the previous Conservative government. No start date has been announced, but the UK DRS scheme has been delayed till 2027.
