Ireland’s wine label rules may push producers out

New health warning labels on alcoholic drinks in Ireland could drive producers away from the market, warns Dublin-based Master of Wine, Barbara Boyle.

The rules, requiring bold red warnings on bottles, are proving a challenge for producers and importers alike. Set to take effect in May 2026, the labels must highlight health risks, including liver disease and cancer, alongside alcohol content and calories. Boyle, a director at wine importers WineMason, says some producers are struggling with compliance, while others may exit the Irish market entirely.

The EU wine sector has strongly opposed the move, accusing Ireland of undermining the single market. Despite lobbying efforts, the Irish government remains firm, citing public health concerns.
