B.C. bans US alcohol in response to Trump tariffs
British Columbia this week has followed Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec by banning all US alcohol from government-run liquor stores in retaliation for President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Premier David Eby, confirmed that the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch has stopped purchasing US beer, wine and spirits, removing existing stock from its 198 stores. This follows an earlier restriction on alcohol from Republican-led states.
The ban has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters praise it as a firm response to US trade actions, while critics warn it could hurt Canadian businesses relying on American ingredients.
The impact on US alcohol would be major, as Canada is its largest export market, responsible for over $1 billion in annual alcoholic sales. It comes as the American wine industry is experiencing a decline in sales, and wineries are struggling.
