Aldi bets on bubble-free Prosecco for summer sips
Aldi has launched a still Prosecco in UK stores at just £5.99, hoping the fizz-free twist on the Italian favourite becomes the drink of the summer. But will Brits embrace a Prosecco without bubbles?
The new “Costellore It’s Still Prosecco” offers the familiar fruit and floral flavours of classic sparkling Prosecco, minus the effervescence. Made in the Prosecco DOC region from Glera grapes, the wine is light, fresh and slightly off-dry, with a subtle honeyed finish. It is only slightly lower in alcohol than its sparkling counterpart (around 10.5% ABV compared to 11% ABV).
Officially recognised by the Prosecco DOC, still Prosecco — known locally as Prosecco Tranquillo — accounts for just 0.1% of total production.
Produced by Italian Wine Brands, the wine hopes to take advantage of a growing interest in lighter, lower-alcohol wines. And with the UK being the world’s second-biggest importer of sparkling Prosecco, they see still Prosecco as a seasonal opportunity, which Aldi say is perfect for those seeking a lighter, trend-forward alternative to traditional white wine.
