Flavonoid-rich diet good for you
A new UK Biobank study has found that people who consume a wide variety of flavonoid-rich foods and drinks, like tea, berries, apples and red wine, have a significantly lower risk of dying from any cause.
Researchers followed over 124,000 adults for up to 11.8 years and discovered that those with the most diverse flavonoid diets had up to 20% lower risk of chronic diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and respiratory illness. Notably, red wine contributed around 5% of total flavonoid intake, making moderate consumption a potential part of a health-supporting diet.
The findings highlight that both the quantity and diversity of flavonoids matter - simply drinking tea isn’t enough! A mix of flavonoid sources, including a glass of wine, could be key to lowering disease risk and increasing lifespan. The research, published in Nature Food, supports broad dietary variety for better long-term health.
