Milton Vineyard grubs up
Milton Vineyard, one of Gisborne’s most influential wineries and a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in New Zealand, has grubbed up its vines, marking the end of an era for the region.
The decision follows several challenging years for the estate, which had been on the market for some time. Despite receiving interest, no sale was completed, with owners Anne and James Milton ultimately choosing a different path after separating. It is understood that Anne Milton has decided to retire from the business that she set up in 1984.
Founded in the early days of Gisborne’s modern wine scene, Milton Vineyard earned a reputation for quality wines and principled farming, becoming one of the first producers in the country to achieve organic and biodynamic certification. Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 caused mayhem in the region and recent wet vintages since have been particularly difficult for growers.
