GlassRite project a success
WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) has saved over 20,000 tonnes of glass since 2006 through its GlassRite Wine project and increased bulk imports of wine to the UK by over 90 million litres with around 115 million glass bottles now being filled in the UK.
The UK is the world’s largest importer of wine, buying in some 1.6 billion bottles every year which in turn leads to 630,000 tonnes of glass entering the UK’s waste stream and creates significant CO2 emissions through transportation. Through the project, WRAP is seeking to reduce this impact by collaborating with the supply chain to encourage the use of lighter-weight wine bottles and the bulk importation of wine.
