UK wine market in downward trend

A new report by Mintel shows that wine consumption is falling in the UK and analysts puts the changes down to public concern over binge-drinking and the rises in alcohol duty. The UK is the world's biggest importer of wine but with sales and consumption rates down Mintel say producers need to target a younger audience of 25-34 year olds to ensure future growth.

Meanwhile Majestic Wine is experiencing a 20% decline in sales at its Wine and Beer World stores in Calais and Cherbourg as demand for booze cruises slumps. Majestic blame the weak pound against the euro which is putting a stop to customers from travelling to France to stock up on 'cheap' wine and avoid the high UK duty on alcohol. They have closed the distribution depot in Calais and brought 12 staff back to work in the UK.
