Jura wine sells for €57,000

A 237-year-old bottle of Vin Jaune from France's Jura region fetched a record price of €57,000 at a wine festival auction in the town of Arbois. One of the festival founders claims Vin Jaune has finally hit the big league but another commentator reckons the real reason the wine fetched so much was due to a 2nd bidder who badly wanted this bottle. Namely a very respected Paris-based collector known to have tasted many old Jura wines, but who had never tasted any wine of this age.

Jura’s Vin Jaune is famed for its ability to age for extended periods, thanks to its Sherry-like maturation in barrel underneath a voile or layer of yeast. Produced exclusively from Savagnin grapes, it is aged for at least six years before release. Those who have tasted this 1773 vintage have been astonished by it's freshness, intensity and range of flavours. The amateur wine group who bought the 1773 vintage is not planning to sit on its investment or sell the bottle on – they’re going to drink it of course!
