England riots affect the drinks trade
The riots across England's towns and cities this week affected the drinks trade with off licences, pubs and restaurants directly under attack from looters and businesses forced to close early on the following days as a precautionary measure.
Analysis of 28 town centres by the Local Data Company showed that more than 10% of UK retail and leisure businesses have been directly affected by looting and riots and independent businesses, defined as those operating less than five outlets, account for 65% of those damaged. Overall 48,404 shops, pubs, restaurants and clubs have been directly or indirectly impacted by the disorder. Michelin-starred restaurant, The Ledbury also came under attack from around 20 rioters who smashed in the door to threaten diners and steal personal items. Kitchen staff came to the aid of customers and scared off the looters with rolling pins and other kitchen tools.
