Paper wine bottles set to launch in the UK

Weighing only 55g compared to 500g for a glass bottle and with a carbon footprint 10% that of a glass bottle, the paper wine bottle seems to tick all the environmental boxes. In addition it is compostable and decomposes in weeks.

Greenbottle, the company behind the product, already manufactures the world's first paper milk bottle which is being tested in Asda in the southwest of England. The paper wine bottle works along the same lines as wine in a box with a paper outer and a plastic inner to keep the wine in pristine condition. The company will be retaining a wine bottle so as not to alienate customers and lead them along gently to this new packaging concept. Greenbottle's products are currently made in Turkey but a plant is due to open in Cornwall soon.
