Cannubi Estate victory
Italian wine producers are celebrating victory as a tribunal court in Rome returns the Cannubi vineyard area in Barolo to its previous size. In 2010 a decree had increased the area to 34ha from 15ha. The previous decree enabled a Barolo DOCG wine formerly labelled as Cannubi Boschis, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Cannubi Muscatel or Cannubi Valletta could, from the 2010 vintage, be relabelled as purely 'Cannubi'. 11 out of 19 Cannubi producers had been concerned that this was diluting the prestigious wine name. Now the tribunal has ruled grapes from these four subzones must no longer be allowed to produce straight Cannubi.
Some believe the dispute is far from over and will probably end up in the high court.
