Argentina located to the East of Chile in South America, has some of the highest vineyards in the world ranging between 700 and 1,400m. Salta in the north reach heights of 3015m, although the average for Argentina is 900m.
The altitude means many wines are grown in semi desert conditions with snow melt from the Andes provides an increasing scarce water resource. The altitude mean that many Argentinan wines have deep colour (from high UV light), and the cool nights retain acidity.
Mendoza is the key region in Argentina with 70% of all vineyards planted here. To the North Catamarca and Salta balance the extra suns energy by being higher in altitude, with Salta being as high as 3015m in the north, while Catamarca is better known for its table grapes. Moving south but still above Mendoza is the marginal and arid area of La Rioja and the the more important San Juan. Below Mendoza is the relatively new Patagonia region.
