Ridgeview and the 2006 English Harvest Mike Roberts

This show was published 10 November 2006

Overview

Mike Roberts talks to Chris about Ridgeview, a specialist sparkling wine producer which was established in 1996. They currently have 30 acres of their own vines and another 20 acres with contract growers.

In 1996 their first vintage was voted the best English wine. Since then their Bloomsbury wine has won a number of awards including the IWSC top English wine three times. One reason for its success is the blending of wines to create layers of flavour. This includes a small proportion of aging wine in oak barrels to add layers of flavour.

Mike believes in Sparkling wine being the future of English wine because of the higher added value and the relatively closeness to Champagne and similar soil types and climate. With London being an international capital and the English being the largest consumer of Champagne than any other country it is not surprising that Mike believes sparkling wine is the future.

We also talk to Mike about the 2006 Harvest report. In general volumes were very good, although the heat in July resulted in slightly less acidity than normal, but with good sugar levels. There were some heavy rains in September which lead to some botrytis in the vineyard in September, and meant some poor sited vineyards the grapes had absorbed too much water leading to less concentrated wines.
