Overview

Mt Difficulty is one of the top Pinot Noir producers in Bannockburn a sub-region of Otago, New Zealand. It has been 20 years since the first Otago Pinots started to appear so we asked Michael Herrick to bring us up to date on the wines being produced in the region and what they have learn't about the grape varieties that work and don't work. Otago Merlot may be good but is uneconomical, Pinot Gris is up and coming and Gewurtztraminer can thrive.

Michael talks about the geology and how wild plants such as thyme, which grows throughout the region, can influence the flavour of the wines.

In the interview we explore the different cropping levels used for different Pinot Noirs produced by Mt Difficulty

Entry level wine Roaring Meg is cropped at 4 Tonnes/Acre = 80 Hl/Ha
Mt Difficulty Estate is cropped at 2.5 Tonnes/Acre = 40 Hl/Ha
Mt Difficulty Single Vineyard is cropped at 1 Tonne/Acre = 20 Hl/Ha
