- Wine regions of Croatia with Sasa Spiranec
Overview
We interview wine writer Sasa Spiranec on the wine regions of Croatia and the history and winemaking culture of the country.
Sasa describes the key wine regions of Croatia as coastal, to the west and south of Croatia, continental in the north producing aromatic whites and sweet whites and lastly eastern continental by the Danube river, good for Welschriesling or Gewurtztraminer. We hear about the geography as well as the history of a country that's been growing grapes since 500BC. No wonder then that Croations have a culture of drinking wine and that 50% of the 65 million litres produced each year is consumed domestically and much is made from small plots as a hobby. There's a huge number of grape growers who use cooperatives to produce their wine although there are much bigger producers, usually found in coastal regions.
