Croatian grape varieties with Sasa Spiranec

In this second interview with wine writer Sasa Spiranec we find out about the indigenous grape varieties of Croatia from the different wine regions.
Sasa describes the 3 main white grapes Graševina (Welschriesling), Malvazija Istriana and Pošip, which is primarily grown in the Dalmatian region. Grasevina is the most widely grown of the white grapes and accounts for the majority of exports. The biggest red variety is Plavac Mali, the most planted grape in Croatia and in Dalmatia where 80% of the reds are produced. Other popular reds include Babic, Teran, Pinot Noir in the cooler north and in the east Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt or international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. We also find out that the Crljenak Kaštelanski grape is the original Zinfandel now better known across the world as a Californian grape variety.
