- Prof Rainer Jung of Geisenheim on plastic corks
Overview
Prof Rainer Jung of Geisenheim talks to us about plastic corks and the advantages (mainly to producers) of using them over natural corks. From the consumers point of view you never know a wine is sealed with a synthetic cork until it is time to open the bottle - to all intents and purposes it looks the same as a natural cork on the outside of a sealed bottle. Its only upon opening you notice its plastic. It can be hard to get out (Prof Jung explains why) and back in again. But for producers it has many advantages. Its cheaper than natural cork and can be used with exactly the same machinery and wine bottles. But will we ever see it being used for fine wines? Prof Jung thinks not as its unlikely connoisseurs and collectors will ever accept synthetic even if they may be capable of giving wine a long shelf life.
