- Elizabeth Rice on the Central Valley in California
Overview
We chat to Elizabeth Rice of Delicato Family Vineyards about the Central Valley region of California. The area accounts for around 40% of Californian wine with lots of different grape varieties and mainly entry valley wines. In the 1920s the Delicato family established vineyards in Lodi which is best known for old vine Zinfandel. Delicato now controls about 55% of the old vine plantings. Old equates to around 35 years old and older although no strict rules exist. Lodi, at base of Sierra foothill mountains, is cooler than the rest of Central Valley with winds from the coast following the Delta river and stopping at the mountains.
