- Jose Vouillamoz on the book Wine Grapes
Overview
Jose Vouillamoz is a botanist & grape geneticist, trained in grape DNA profiling. He is co-author of the book Wine Grapes along with Jancis Robinson MW and Julia Harding MW. Jose is Swiss and studied at the University of Lausanne. He got government funding to go to the US to the UC Davis University of California to work on a project researching Swiss grape varieties. He tells how he came to work with Jancis Robinson in 2004, updating the Oxford Companion to Wine and later how they came to write specifically about grape varieties for Wine Grapes. The book lists and describes 1368 grape varieties in the world, grown in 42 countries to make commercial wine. It took 4 years to gather the information and was published in 2012. Since the book came out they have been informed of some missing varieties which will be included in second edition when the time comes to update the list. The book, nicknamed 'the bible of grapes', is selling well and has won awards.
