Caroline Gilby MW on the Red wines and styles of Cyprus

This show was published 09 December 2016

Overview

In this final interview with Caroline Gilby MW on Cyprus we discuss red wines. One of the most widely planted red grapes is the indigenous grape variety Maratheftiko, known locally as Vambakadha. Shiraz is also widely planted in Cyprus and there is a new kid on the block, only recently discovered, called Yanudi and produced commercially for the first time in 2013. Historically a lot of bulk wine produced by a group of 4 large producers, but in 2004 when Cyprus joined EU the subsidised bulk wine business declined as subsidies were taken away from producers, meaning the business was no longer viable. In the UK you can buy Cypriot wines from Berry Bros & Rudd, Marks & Spencer and a few specialist importers.
