- Alistair Nesbitt on Mapping the UK Wine Regions
Overview
Alistair Nesbitt is a viti-climatologist. He has a business that assesses future opportunities and risks for vineyards in the UK as the climate changes to identify commercially viable sites. Of course, vines can grow in many different climatic conditions but to be a commercial success we need to know where will grapes grow to generate sufficient yield/quality to bring to market. In the UK, the best sites are currently to be found in the south east and south central but areas on Essex, Suffolk and South Norfolk have great potential. The temperatures may be a bit lower but rainfall and frost-risk is lower, although wind can be an issue. Also the climate in East Anglia is less variable year on year.
