Chile with Ophelie Loubersac

This show was published 22 September 2018

Overview

In this second interview with Ophelie Loubersac we talk about Baron Philippe de Rothschild's Chilean wines. The winery is based in the Maipo Valley, 45km South of Santiago. Baroness de Philippine Rothschild first venture producing wine in Chile was in the late 1990's at Chateau Almaviva, with a premium positioning. Following the Mouton Cadet strategy in France, the created a new Chilean brand called Escudo Rojo. Their main wine is a blend of Merlot, Carmenere, Syrah and Cabernet Franc but they also produce single varietals. We discuss how Merlot and Carmenere are genetic cousins - at one time they were planted together and mixed up but while Merlot is an early ripener, Carmenere ripens late, and so they recognised they needed to be separated out and grown/harvested differently.
