Fairtrade first for Fairhills

South African wine company Origin Wine, owner of the fairtrade Fairhills brand has become the first fairtrade wine to cover all three fairtrade wine-producing countries with production facilities and community support projects in South Africa, Argentina and now Chile.

An export company has been set up based in Curicó, called Chilean Vineyards S.A. and has been certified as a licensed fairtrade exporter.

The move follows the demise of the Los Robles cooperative in Chile, of which four ex-producers will be supplying the Fairhills Chile brand as well as own-label fairtrade wine. Origin has also recruited Paula Bottero, ex winemaker of Los Robles.

The Co-op will launch a range of Sauvignon Blanc, Carmenère and Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot in early 2009.
