- UK Wine Show 100 Ernst Loosen of the Dr Loosen Estate on Riesling
Overview
The Dr Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for 200 years. Ernst Loosen took over in 1988. The family's estate is in the Mosel including 6 Grand Cru vineyards. They have many old vines and no American root stocks - all original root stocks, which is a rarity for Europe. They grow only Riesling, this what the Mosel is famous for. They have a 2nd wine estate in Pfalz where they grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Noir. They also grow Riesling in Washington State in a joint venture with Chateau St Michel since 1979. The Riesling ishe most successful Riesling in America and brings htet best of the old world and the new world together. The style is medium dry with 12-15g sugar, 12% alcohol. The flavour profile is yellow stone fruit - apricot, yellow peach, mango, whereas in the Mosel the flavours are green apple, white peach, sometimes cassis.
Riesling needs acidity to express itself and it is also important for the ageing of the wine.
There are 3 types of soil in the Mosel - blue slate, red volcanic and red slate - each give different flavours and characters to the wine.
