- UK Wine Show 244 Ian Meadows on ancient English wine drinking
Overview
Ian Meadows, archaeologist, excavated the first proven vineyard in Roman Britain in Woolston in the Nene Valley. He tells us how the Romans came to settle in England after numerous attempts by Julius Caesar to conquer the country and how the British people adopted many Roman ways of life and began to embrace food and drink. But there's evidence to prove we British were drinking wine long before the Romans arrived as far back as the Iron Age, when wine imported from the Mediterranean was being consumed at burial ceremonies.
