Sherry sales halve in the UK over 15 years
Infographics by Wine Stats using information from Consejo Regulador de Los Vinos de Jerez, show that sales of sherry in the UK, which until 2010 was the category’s largest market, have gone from around 210,000 hectolitres to around 100,000hl. Likewise, the Dutch market declined from 180,000hl to just 60,000hl between 2002 and 2014.
Although domestic sherry sales have remained around 120,000hl since 2002, overall sales including exports have dropped from nearly 700,000hl to around 370,000hl, showing that the taste for Sherry outside Spain is steep decline.
The Drinks Business reported in 2010 that high-end Sherry in the UK was enjoying a renaissance, with consumers drinking less overall, but choosing to spend more on premium brands. There was an explosion of Sherry bars opening in London that are still bringing in new customers.
So while overall consumption is sharply declining, it is mostly due to a fall in sales of cheaper, entry-level Sherries.
