Sales of Spanish Albariño from Rías Baixas take off in the UK
Rías Baixas, the coastal area just north of Portugal, saw exports to the UK grow by 50% for 2019. The growth now means the British are consuming 2 million litres of the region's fresh white wines made from the Albariño gape. Its popularity has been rising in the UK over a number of years and the UK now accounts for 25% of all Albariño exports.
The Rías Baixas DO includes five sub-regions: Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Ribeira do Ulla and Soutomaior and is made up mostly of small farmers, boasting 6,500 growers spread across just 4,000 hectares.
