UK producer Chapel Down amazes the Spanish with English Albarino

Winery Chapel Down has impressed a group of Albarino experts in Spain’s Galicia, the location of Rias Baixas, the home of Albarino.
The 2014 Chapel Down Albarino which retails for £25 was compared to the more modestly priced 2016 Paz de San Mauro which retails in Spain for €13.40.

The top team of Spaniards included restaurateurs, wine shop owners and Pau Roca, the secretary general at Federación Española del Vino (FEV). Many thought the English wine was the Spanish, with many surprised at the weight of the wine. James Blick, from Devour Tours a Spanish food and wine tour company, said the English wine took them “all a little by surprise” and described it as “tight, racy and well-balanced.”
