Chianti Classico approves named sub-regions for top wines
The Chianti Classico Consortium has approved the use of village names within the classico subregion, known as Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive.
The new sub regions within Chianti are named after some of the best known villages. The wines themselves will be different requiring 90% of the variety to be Sangiovese and the remaining 10% to be indigenous grape varieties. Currently, normal Chianti classico Gran Selezione must be a minimum of 80% Sangiovese and the remaining can be anything including international grape varieties.
The new sub regions are: Castellina, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole, Greve, Lamole, Montefioralle, Panzano, Radda, San Casciano, San Donato in Poggio (which includes Barberino Tavarnelle and Poggibonsi), and Vagliagli.
