Italian government guarantees Brunello

The Italian government is to guarantee that all exported Brunello is 100% Sangiovese. Agriculture minister Luca Zaia announced the move to ensure the continued export of the wine to the US.

America had threatened to block imports after it was suggested that some Brunellos contained grapes other than Sangiovese. As the biggest foreign market for the wine – taking about a quarter of the seven million bottles of Brunello di Montalcino produced each year – such a ban would have proved very costly to the Italians.

Luca Zaia announced a certification process, which would entail inspections to make sure that no grape varieties other than Sangiovese have been added to the wines.
