Created for it’s name sake Wine Enthusiast, this Apple only app. is a US centric wine app. with reviews from the said magazine. While US centric, (there are no English wines, under the search option UK!) It does have a massive database of wines from around the world from Italy to New Zealand and many in between. The main gripe I have is that the most recent vintage I could find was 2009, which means that any recommendations for more recent wines are simply not being updated. No good if you are standing at the wine shop when most whites are currently the 2011 or 2010 vintage. A similar problem exists for the vintage recommendations. Where there is good granularity for instance - Provence Red Wines the most recent vintage is 2009. Still if you are gaining wines and want to know if your 2000 Bordeaux red is about ready to drink then it is a good starting point.
As a tool to find wines to buy it is fairly useless, it requires a good connection to the internet to work which is not always the case when you are in the wine isle of a supermarket. But you can search by price, rating, style, varietal and region, and if you want to look up wines while on the couch it is an excellent app if somewhat out of date. Wines that you discover can be added to your “Lists” which can be in categories such as “Wines I like”, “Wines to Buy” and “Wines to Own”.
The app is fairly responsive if connected to a good internet, it flows well throughout and while fairly simple it does it very well.
When Wine Enthusiast gets around to updating the data in the database it could become very useful, until then I would suggest that you only purchase the app. if you have a cellar of classic wines that you want to know the best time to drink them.
I rate this app 85 out of 100, good but could be better.
