- Will Davenport on Organic Wine
Overview
Will Davenport is the owner of Davenport Vineyards and has been growing organic grapes commercially since 2003. We catch up with him to find out why he went organic.
Davenport Vineyards is one of the 2 largest commercial organic growers in the UK out of about 6 organic producers in total, with a vineyard in Sussex and one in Kent. They have been certified organic by the Soil Association since 2003. Growing organically is challenging in England, given the notoriously wet weather and threat of mildew and disease to the vines. But Davenport has found the vines grow more healthily producing a different style of fruit, slightly higher yields and resulting in a better quality wine with lower sulphur levels than conventional wines.
