- Sonia Fernandes of ViniPortugal on Portuguese wines
Overview
Everybody knows about Port, but still wines from Portugal have a growing reputation for quality. We talk with Sonia Fernandes from ViniPortugal about the quiet revolution.
Sonia Fernandes is from ViniPortugal, the trade association for Portugese wines, representing producers and promoting Portuguese wines. Sonia looks after UK, Brazil and Angola. Still wine is produced all over the country and is increasingly about the whites, roses and reds rather than just the traditional red wines. Sonia talks about the regions and some of the grape varieties that are being grown. Vinho Verde (meaning green wine) is the most famous white wine from Portugal but other regions are growing fast, e.g. the Setubal Peninsula, and sweet white wines, e.g Muscatel, are becoming more popular. The country has many small producers though the bigger producers account for about 55% of production. About 70% of wine is sold and consumed within Portugal and roughly 30% is exported.
