- Ernst Ruhl on Geisenheim Root Stock Breeding
Overview
Professor Ernst Ruhl from the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute explains how root stocks are bred in this third interview.
We hear how different root stocks are needed for different types of soils and how it takes two or three generations to breed new root stocks - the equivalent of a human's entire working life. Ernst also tells us how the vine's root system is critical to managing the supply of water to the plant and grapes and how factors such as irrigation influence the type of root stock that is required.
