Overview

Joe Fattorini, is the wine writer for The Herald in Glasgow. We talk with Joe about the wine scene in Scotland and why a respected journalist would risk it all to become a Master of Wine.

While working as a university lecturer Joe was asked to run wine courses and at the time was approached by journalist Tom Shields to write a wine column. Joe has since worked for Threshers and other wine companies including Matthew Clark and in radio and TV. He started writing a weekly wine column for The Herald 13 years ago and has only ever missed 1 column. He his now studying for his Master of Wine.

In terms of the Scottish consumer they are very well served by wine retailers, on a similar scale to London. There's a broad range of choice and at the high end, top clarets are easily accessible. The best areas to sell wine are the West coast, Aberdeen, the Orkneys as well as the central belt between Edinburgh and Glasgow where most wine is sold. At the top end, consumers in Edinburgh tend to be more traditional, old world whereas Glaswegians are a bit more independent, looking for iconic new world wines.
