Crisis in Cava as quality producers abandon the DO

Since last week nine producers have asked to leave the Cava DO, with 6 more rumoured to be planning to leave in the future. Sparkling winemaker Raventos i Blanc announced it will leave the appellation as it plans to adopt a new and un-certified regional appellation designation named 'Conca Del Riu Anoia', after the end of this month. A move which they hope will help them deepen their understanding of the viticultural traditions within this small geographical area.

Many producers are now focusing on building individual sparkling wine brands, as Cava's global brand image was primarily associated with cheap, low-quality wine.

It is felt that to combat this growing crisis some appellation rules need to be reviewed including increasing the minimal time the wine is in contact with the lees from 12 to 15 months and the message conveyed that Cava is a high quality, unique product.
