Sassicaia fraudster caught with counterfeit wine worth €2 million
Fraudsters in Milan have been arrested after an investigation showing that cheap Sicilian wine was being bottled as the famous Super Tuscan Sassicaia.
Sassicaia was the first Italian producer to use Cabernet Sauvignon to make high end Italian wines and is revered around the word. But a total of 11 people were involved in the production of over 4,000 bottles a month of fake Sassicaia worth around €400,000, from a warehouse near Milan. When the first two were arrested, 80,000 counterfeit items were found that could have produced 13,000 bottles, worth over €2 million.
The wine was sold at a huge 70% discount to importers in Korea, China and Russia.
